Stentor Elysia cello ‘English model’

Stentor Elysia cello ‘English model’

The Stentor Elysia ‘English Model’ is one of those rare cellos that manages to tick all the right boxes without shouting about it. It’s technically full-size, but with a slightly shorter back length and shallower ribs — which means it feels a touch more manageable under the arm and bow. For younger players moving up or anyone with a slighter frame, that little bit of extra comfort can make all the difference.

It’s solidly built with quality tonewoods — spruce top, figured maple back, and ebony fittings.

Sound-wise, it has a clear, focused voice with enough warmth and depth to draw the player in. It’s a cello that will grow with a player, not hold them back. Honest, well-made, easy to play, and rewarding to listen to — this is a seriously good option for a developing musician finding their voice.

Condition

This cello is in very good condition, meaning it’s not quite “as new” — there are a few very small scuffs here and there — but nothing that affects playability or overall appearance. Structurally, it’s absolutely sound and in excellent shape.

It has received a brand-new professional setup carried out by us, ensuring it plays beautifully and is ready to inspire from the first note. Visually, it’s a striking instrument with deep, rich varnish that highlights the quality of the tonewood — a cello that looks as good as it sounds.

The setup

This cello has received a completely new professional setup, including a top-quality Despiau “Three Tree” bridge and a freshly fitted soundpost that’s been played in and readjusted for optimal balance and resonance.

We’ve fitted it with a carefully chosen string combination: Evah Pirazzi Gold on the C and G for warmth and power, and Larsen on the D and A for clarity and projection. The result is a cello that’s not just easy to play, but genuinely rewarding — with a full, even tone across all four strings and a depth that responds beautifully under the bow.

The Sound

Starting with quality materials always helps — and so does skilled craftspersonship. As mentioned before, this is a slightly smaller-bodied cello, but thanks to its carefully carved bridge, well-fitted soundpost, and the excellent string setup (Evah Pirazzi Gold on the bottom, Larsen on top), it more than holds its own.

The result is a cello that’s clear, responsive, elegant, and colourful in tone. It speaks easily, with a pleasing balance across the strings carrying warmth which makes it sing. It invites exploration — ideal for students ready to develop their ear and begin shaping their own musical voice.
